Abstract

The development of tourism villages requires the support of competent human resources, particularly in the field of tour guiding. Desa Wisata Sayan, Ubud, Bali, possesses significant natural and cultural potential; however, it still faces challenges in enhancing the capacity of local tour guides. This study aims to examine the implementation of the Small Group Discussion (SGD) method in tour guiding technique training and to analyze the benefits and challenges of its application in a community-based training context. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach and was conducted in Desa Wisata Sayan, Ubud District, Gianyar Regency, Bali. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the application of the SGD method creates a participatory and contextual learning process, improves participants’ understanding of tour guiding techniques, and enhances their communication skills and self-confidence. Nevertheless, several challenges were identified, including differences in participants’ levels of participation and limited training time, which require a more optimal facilitation role. This study concludes that the Small Group Discussion method is effective as a participatory learning approach in tour guiding training for tourism villages and has the potential to support sustainable local human resource development.
